Movement is what gets a hesitant child properly into the water. Chasing something across a pool means swimming without thinking about swimming, which is how confidence is built at the age where being told to practise achieves nothing.

Four designs are offered. It works in a pool, a large paddling pool or a bath. Rinse it in fresh water after use in a chlorinated pool and dry it before storing, since trapped water is what makes bath toys go mouldy inside. Important: a toy is not a swimming aid and gives no buoyancy support. Never leave a child unattended in or near water, and keep non-swimmers within an adult's reach at all times.
